RANCH MAPPING & GIS
What is a Geographic Information System?
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based tool used to create and store spatial information that can be managed, analyzed and visually displayed on a map.
GIS allows you to connect data with geography in order to “visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends” (from ESRI website).
Why is it Valuable?
GIS provides a visual framework for conceptualizing and understanding your ranch. An updated GIS database will greatly improve the efficiency of all other programs by helping to coordinate resource use, better visualize projects and inventories, and facilitate planning. A GIS-based map can improve communication with un-initiated personnel by visually presenting a story, which, in turn, results in better decision making. GIS also offers an easily-accessible way to store data and spatial information for recordkeeping and documentation.
Examples of GIS & Mapping Services Include:
Base mapping and spatial inventories of assets including property boundaries, roads, fences, infrastructure & facilities, water sources, streams, etc.
Project planning and site planning.
Analysis of spatial patterns such as livestock movements, wildlife habitat, soils, vegetation and wetlands.
Spatial modeling such as carrying capacity and stocking rates, agricultural production, water and irrigation flows, or wildlife and livestock impacts to vegetation.
